What is music therapy?
Music therapy is a research based profession in which music is used to support & generalize skills from music therapy to non-music settings. Music therapy has the potential to address a young child's developing cognitive, physical, social, emotional, communication, and sensorimotor skills as well as promote regulation and self expression!
How does music work?
Instrument play can be used to strengthen fine/gross motor and foster social emotional skills.
Singing encourages vocalization and supports communication.
Musical improvisation facilitates self-expression & creativity.
Listening to music can decrease agitation and help calm and soothe.
Guided movement to music may increase range of motion, imitation skills, and self regulation.
Engagement in music stimulates attention and increases motivation to participate more fully in other aspects of life & learning.
